For our last few days in Sri Lanka the plan was to hang out in a bit fancier hotel at Bentota. To get from Nuwara Eliya to Bentota you can either take a private Taxi (Minivan) or a bus & train combination.
We opted for the bus to see a bit more of the country :). The route took us first back to Colombo cause there is no direct hightway from Nuwara Eliya to Bentota. The train would also have been an option via Kandy and Colombo, but it was more complicated and more expensive than the bus.
The ride was pretty fast from from 7:15 – 12:00. Through the hill country it’s quite spectacular and a bit scary to go down these endless serpentines watching tea plantations go by. If you travel by bus you definitely travel with the locals and it’s really pricey. If I remember right we payed about 60 Rupees for the 5h ride.
In colombo the main bus station is really close to the main train station, so it was just a short walk to get to our train to Bentota.
This train ride is also quite cool. For at least half of the ride you travel along the coastline just a few hundred meters away from the ocean.
But be carefull if you let your feet dangle out of the open train door. We watched a russian girl beeing a bit to careless and catching some deep cuts on her feet doing that.
In Bentota we also found an Austrian restaurant where you can even get a Schnitzel besides the typical Sri Lankan cuisine.
