Friday 30th January
As we had already decided, we stopped the diving course cause we were not so sure about the teaching methods and it would take too long for us to finish the course.
We payed half of it, so 150€ instead of 300€, but when I think about it, I should have payed less than Tini, cause she did one free water dive, and I couldn’t because of the trouble with my ears. But we will see if the amount was fair when we try to continue at some diving school back home in Austria.
Mirissa Temple
For this day we decided to climb the small hill in Mirissa where the temple is located. You can find it easily just behind half way of the beach, on Matara road the first steps are visible to walk up.
The view from the top of the hill was quite stunning.
As we are suckers for Mango Lassi we tried to drink as much of it as we could. At the reggae bar I would dare to say we found the best mango lassi in town.
Surfing in Weligama
In the afternoon we went back to Weligama for the first surf session. Since Sri Lanka is a perfect location for surf beginners and especially Weligama offers a very long beach break and very convincing rent prices for boards (300 rupees for 1 hour = 2€) we started there. As in most surf areas the best time to go out is 7-9 am and about 5-6 pm. The waves are really consistent and perfect for beginners, green waves are easy to catch and if you fall it is not too bad cause they are just about 1/2m to 1 1/2m high.
I just had one week of surf school in Portugal a few years ago but made it 2 times in the set and even caught green waves. The only problem is the lack of stamina and after 30 minutes I was already feeling pretty exhausted. But still it was a lot of fun and I recommend Weligama for every beginner. The locals are also really nice and helpful and taking a lesson is also possible at every surf rental shack there.
At this day we also had a pretty nice sunset I have to say.
After this refreshing bit of water sports we checked out the Weligama market (cause we have seen it on our bus ride to Galle the first time and didn’t realize that it exists 🙂
Pretty much directly behind the surfing beach is the area where the market and tons of shops are. Supermarkets, clothing shops, and almost everything else you can think of. Even some Austrian cheese 🙂
If you stay in Weligama, try to pick a hotel close to the beach area in front of the “shopping” area or the market.
